Get Your Pool Ready for the Summer Season

The biggest problem when we open the pool during summertime is dealing with all the debris and algae growing since last winter. I believe you’ll agree with us when we say the pool looks less like a pool and more like Shrek’s swamp. If you don’t have ogre-like tendencies, you cannot imagine putting a toe in that kind of water. So, if you’re ready to open up your pool this summer, here are some things you can do to ensure the water is clean and balanced:

Clean The Filters And Start Clearing Up The Solid Debris

You’ll notice the green tinge and solid particles floating in the water once you get the tarp off the pool. We recommend that you change the filter and start straining and vacuuming all the leaves and dead insects floating at the top. Next, turn on the filter and top of the pool if the water level has gone down during the winter. You can also start scrubbing the algae on the wall in this stage to loosen it up and get some out through the filter.

Get The Water Tested And Balanced

If you’ve been balancing your pool water for years, you should be able to figure out what’s needed and add the required chemicals. And if you’ve got no experience, we recommend getting the water tested. You’ll get a mineral analysis of the water, the acidity or alkalinity, and chlorine levels. A testing service will also recommend chemicals like chlorineshock chemicals, and balancers to add to make the water safe for swimming. You should not go into the pool until the water pH levels are balanced. So, be patient; this process can take several days.

Maintaining The Pool

Once the water clears up and your pH levels are between the 7.2-7.4 range, with an alkalinity between 80 and 120 and calcium hardness in the 150 ppm and 250 ppm range, you can take a dip in the pool. All you have to do now is maintain it throughout the season. You can use a litmus test or a pool testing kit to check the water levels and adjust accordingly.
